Keynote: Teaching and Learning with Mixed Reality and Games – How We Find the Fun in Learning Using the Affordances of New Technology

Eric Klopfer is a professor and Director of the Scheller Teacher Education Program and the Education Arcade at MIT. Klopfer’s research explores how educational technology, games, and computer simulations can be tools for teaching complex systems and developing cognitive and computational thinking skills.
“In the MIT Education Arcade, we have spent over a decade designing learning games that have deep connections with players’ lives—artifacts that could be a part of their lives in school and at home, that could rouse their curiosity and determination, that might even seep into their dreams and imaginations. Our games are designed to resonate with their lives, passions, and all the systems in which they are embedded. Part of this work involves harnessing the power of new technologies in such a way that we change not only how students learn, but that they learn. For many years we have been working on mixed realities (AR and VR) in education and have started to discover where, when and for whom they can add value. We aim for our research to guide the way forward for development and implementation of these technologies to change what learning looks like. This talk will highlight the principles that we use to design effective learning experiences using games and mixed realities, drawing upon examples that have been used in and out of classrooms around the world.”

Disaster Recovery: Saving the City of Sarasota

In 2016, the City of Sarasota, Florida was struck by a ransomware attack — a terrifying time when Herminio Rodriguez and his security analyst learned that Cybercriminals had encrypted millions of files and were demanding $34 million in bitcoin to decrypt them. Herminio will discuss the steps he and his team took to recover the city with remote backup solutions and tested recovery tools. Today, many businesses and organizations are not prepared to undergo an attack like the one Sarasota experienced. Herminio will highlight the major mistakes and flaws within businesses that go into disaster recovery planning, testing operations, and making backups accessible. This is an extremely vital issue that too many people think will never happen to them, only until they fall victim to an attack.

Discussion Panel with Digital Promise and NJ Teaching Fellows

Technology offers the opportunity for teachers to become more collaborative and extend learning beyond the classroom. To enact this vision, schools need to support teachers in accessing needed technology and in learning how to use it effectively. In collaboration with HP and Microsoft’s Reinvent the Classroom initiative, Digital Promise Global is supporting innovative teachers across the United States who demonstrate powerful teaching and learning with technology. Fellows selected for the program demonstrate the principles of Powerful Learning in their teaching and learning practice. Stefani will be leading a panel discussion during lunch with 4 HP New Jersey Teaching Fellows to discuss how their teaching has evolved with technology and how they design learning experiences that are personal and accessible; authentic and challenging; collaborative and connected; and inquisitive and reflective. Dr. Pautz comes to Digital Promise with 15 years of experience in education, including both K-12 public schools and higher education. She brings expertise in change leadership, blended learning, literacy development, and Universal Design for Learning. Prior to joining Digital Promise, Dr. Pautz was Coordinator of Blended Learning and Innovation with Baltimore County Schools, where she helped lead the district in student-centered instructional design and 1:1 computing implementation
